“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

– Maya Angelou

My name is May. Born in May and for lack of creativity, on my parents’ part, they pulled my name from the hospital room calendar. I won’t complain because had I been born in November, there is no telling how I would be identifying myself. I was born and raised in Kenya. My sense of adventure came from living in a household with 3 brothers and parents whose passion for nature and wildlife encompassed everything we did. We were taught to care for what was entrusted to us, to protect and conserve our environment. Nature has a way of pulling all your senses to work together to pay attention to details and appreciate the intricacies of it all. I believe this has informed my approach to photography that is constantly evolving.

I left Kenya for Pittsburgh in the US in 2004 deep down because of the urgent sense of adventure and exploring the world in the guise of school. My parents wouldn’t have let me come had I shared my true intention. They had always encouraged us to pursue education because there was no end to learning so this was a cause they would not stifle.

Before we left the house for the airport, my dad handed me his prized possession, a camera Asahi Pentax Sportsmatic - 35mm. He said he bought it secondhand when I was born, and that was the camera he used to take pictures of everything living and dead, my brothers and I included. It was now mine! It felt like the torch had been passed on to me.

I attended Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated with a BA in Communications with a concentration in TV Production. When no one was hiring because of the crushing housing market, I went back to school this time I challenged myself to purse an MBA – International Business, completely out of my comfort zone but I felt the need to diversify myself.

I picked up photography several years later as my escape and I have not stopped since. I enjoy traveling to new places. I enjoy learning culture and ways of life from different communities. I love architecture because I believe they tell stories of the time the were built without words. I am in my element in nature. It is here that I meet myself in the purest of forms. I love to hear and tell stories which makes me appreciate a listening posture.

Like my name, I am a strong possibility. I don’t fit in any box and I allow myself to be. What I hope for this website is that through my eyes, my perspective and my lens, you get to join me in this Visual Expedition and hopefully your life is enriched even in the slightest way.
